Storms lead to I-80 crashes on Christmas

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to nearly 150 weather-related incidents on Nebraska roadways on Christmas Day, according to a report from the NSP.

Several of those were just west of Seward County on Interstate 80, including one that caused several semitrucks to collide.

The NSP said troopers responded to 28 crashes and performed 117 motorist assists as much of the state experienced a white Christmas.

“The vast majority of the incidents did not involve injuries,” NSP said.

One crash around 11:30 a.m. Dec. 25 resulted in the closure of eastbound I-80 for about three hours while clean-up took place in blizzard conditions. No injuries were reported in that crash.

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories were in effect for much of the state through Dec. 26, with hotels full and temporary shelters set up for stranded travelers further west.

The NSP reminds travelers to check 511.Nebraska.gov for updated road conditions before traveling.

Motorists who become stranded should stay with their vehicle and call for help. The NSP Highway Helpline is *55.
