Sons of veterans host annual encampment

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Nebraska and the Dakotas, held their 24th annual Department Encampment at the Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward recently.
Following their encampment meeting on the main floor, they were entertained by speaker Dave Wells, and his topic “The First Nebraska Infantry in the Civil War.” The group gave a donation to the upcoming “Nebraskans in the Civil War” Exhibit at the museum.

Board votes to take care of mold

Mitigation specialists have been called into the Seward County Treasurer’s office to deal with mold found on some of the old bound records stored in the vault below the second floor office.
County Treasurer Jake Zlatkovsky asked for the recently discovered issue to be added to the board of commissioners’ April 18 agenda as an emergency item. The four commissioners present voted in favor of the agenda change and voted to find a remediation company to address the issue.

County’s public transit finding new paths

Seward County’s Public Transit program is working to expand its services despite a few speed bumps.
The Seward County Commissioners on April 16 approved the purchase of a larger van to expand the program’s fleet and a new fee schedule that provides options for day trips to Lincoln, Omaha, zoos, vineyards and other destinations for any Seward County resident. 
The speed bumps include price adjustments and traffic snags in delivering some students to classes.

TOMORROW - Offices open on Arbor Day

The Seward County Courthouse will be open tomorrow on Arbor Day. Seward City Hall will also be open its regular hours.

SPORTS 

CM holds off Nebraska City

The Crete-Milford baseball team had to hold off a late rally by Nebraska City yesterday to bring home a 6-5 win. CM led 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, and the Pioneers scored three runs and had the tying run at second when the game ended. Kenner Svitak and Nick Wendt had three hits each for CM. Svitak drove in two runs, as well. The Cardinals are next in action today at Platteview.

Soccer subdistrict pairings announced

Subdistrict brackets were released by the NSAA yesterday. The Seward girls (9-6) are the No. 2 seed in the B6 bracket. SHS will play Beatrice Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m. at Norris. Lincoln Northwest and Crete will play each other to determine who will play Norris in the semifinal. The district final is Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m.
The Seward boys (4-8) are the No. 3 seed in the B6 subdistrict at Schuyler. Seward will play Scotus at 4 p.m. Monday, April 29. Schuyler and Columbus Lakeview are the other side of the bracket. The subdistrict final is Tuesday, April 30, at 5 p.m.

TODAY - Potato bake

The Lied Senior Center, 1010 Manor Drive in Seward, will host a potato bake from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

TONIGHT - Craft night at SML

The Seward Memorial Library will host Linda Zimbelmann and Helen Borer on Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. as they teach how to make greeting cards. The card making will focus on a spring theme or other special occasion. All materials will be provided, but space is limited, so contact the library to sign up.

TONIGHT - July 4 committee meeting

The 4th of July Committee will meet Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Nebraska National Guard Museum.

TOMORROW - Blood drive at Cattle Bank

Blood can be donated Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of Cattle Bank and Trust. Appointments are recommended by going to ncbb.org/searchdrives and use the sponsor code CBS or call (402) 486-9414.

TOMORROW - Dueling Pianos in Milford

Dueling Pianos with Mike and Rich will perform Friday, April 26, from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Thornridge Golf Course in Milford. TOMORROW - Arbor Day

Arbor Day will be celebrated is Friday, April 26, at 1 p.m. at Nebraska National Guard Museum, sponsored by GFWC Seward Women’s Club and City of Seward Tree Board. The celebration will be held outside on the stage behind the museum. In case of rain, the celebration will move indoors.

Knights of Columbus pancake feed April 28

The Knights of Columbus are hosting a pancake feed at the St. Vincent de Paul Social Hall in Seward on April 28. Breakfast will be served from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

ROUSE, Stephanie

Visitation for Stephanie Rouse will be Thursday, April 25, from 1-8 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. The memorial service will be Friday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Seward, with a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
