SHS girls split week’s two

Execution was good in Seward’s Dec. 12 win at Lincoln Lutheran, but the Bluejays dug too deep a hole against Norris Dec. 15, Coach Beth Bohuslavsky said.

Seward defeated the Warriors 44-27 but lost to the Titans 46-37.

Bohuslavsky said the Jays played a pretty solid game against Lincoln Lutheran.

“The execution was exactly what we wanted in the first quarter,” she said.

Seward led 12-4 at the end of the first period. The second quarter wasn’t as good as the Warriors started making shots and cut the lead to three. Ava Stutzman made a three-pointer at the buzzer to push the lead to six, Bohuslavsky said.

The Jays almost shut out LLHS in the third quarter. The Warriors made a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The fourth quarter saw the SHS offense sputter with just three points, but Bohuslavsky said the team got good looks that didn’t fall.

Ona Stutzman led the team with 11 points and was 3-9 from three. Lovely Hibbert grabbed eight rebounds.

The Jays were back at home Dec. 15 to host Norris and trailed by 10 after the first quarter. It was too much to come back from, Bohuslavsky said. The Jays outscored NHS 11-6 in the second quarter and were able to force turnovers in the press, she said.

In the third quarter, the team settled down a bit and cut the lead to single digits but couldn’t get closer.

The Bluejay defense did force 27 Titan turnovers but couldn’t take advantage of them all.

“We are right there,” Bohuslavsky said. “We can’t start in a hole.”

Kelsey Miller scored 14 to lead the team.

The Jays (4-2) have one game left before the Christmas break – a match-up at Grand Island Central Catholic Friday, Dec. 22, starting at 6 p.m. The Crusaders are one of the top teams in Class C1, and Bohuslavsky said it will be a good battle for SHS.
