Levies will support history

Posted

As the Seward Creative Arts District’s Author in Residence and a long-time Seward resident, I encourage you to vote YES for the levies supporting the Seward County Historical Society and Blue River Historical District. If they pass, most Seward County residents will pay less than $5 per year for each levy.

I have been researching a little-known Seward County woman whose story I hope to turn into a children’s book. In 1928, a girl from rural Nebraska didn’t just decide to attend college and become a mathematician. Something led her to do what few other women of her time had done. To write her story, I need to uncover what she was like as a child and how her community shaped her.

One of the best sources for my research has been the Seward County Historical Society and Museum. The volunteers are helpful. Their books and artifacts give fascinating glimpses into the Seward County of a hundred years ago.

The museum and archives contain actual pieces of history. So does the Blue River Historical District. It documents the history of the Blue River Valley with a real log cabin, native garden, and historical markers about Chief Standing Bear, cattle drives from Texas, and the mills and powerplants of our county.

These organizations give us all a clearer view of our past, whether for researching a book or just learning more about our local history. Both the Blue River Historical District and Seward County Historical Society and Museum maintain historic sites and preserve archives. They support educational programs and promote our community, and they’re fun for visitors of all ages.

We can help sustain these organizations that preserve our local heritage by voting YES for the tax levies on the November ballot. Investing in our past is good for our community’s future.
