ZKE Juniors sweep seven

The Seward ZKE Storage Junior Legion baseball team went undefeated in its games last week.

Seward beat Valparaiso 11-8 June 19, Ashland 15-0 June 20, Roncalli 9-0 June 21, Beatrice 10-2 June 23, Fairbury 14-1 June 24 and Hastings 13-1 and 20-2 June 25.

The Seward bats were on fire all week. ZKE pounded 15 hits against Valparaiso, with Conner Sveeggen and Quinn Berner recording three each. Brycen Burt, Brendon Ruth and Karson Dyer had two apiece.

Cale Gardiner, Berner and Dyer drove in two runs each, as well.

Sveeggen drove in four runs in Seward’s home shut out of Ashland. Ruth, Berner and Kyle Riley each had two RBIs, as well.

Gardiner went 3-3 to lead the team, and Burt and Berner chipped in two hits each. Karson Dyer and Riley Calway each struck out three Ashland batters during their mound appearances.

The team was at Roncalli the next night, and Sveeggen drove in two more runs in the second straight shut-out win. Bostyn Happ and Deklan Lindau had two hits each. Burt and Dyer combined for seven strikeouts in five innings.

Seward scored nine runs in the first two innings against Beatrice and kept the visitors at arm’s length all night. Riley doubled and drove in four, and Ruth and Sveeggen drove in two each.

Seward was back on the road June 24 and scored five runs in the third and seven in the sixth en route to the win over Fairbury. Seward finished with 11 hits, led by three from Happ. Burt hit a home run, as well. He, Riley and Dyer drove in two runs each.

The juniors swept two from Hastings Runza at Hastings Sunday. In game one, the team collected 13 hits, led by two each from Burt, Happ, Ruth, Gardiner and Sveeggen. Gardiner, Riley and Sveeggen drove in two runs each.

Gardiner went 3-5 with three RBIs in game two, and Riley was 3-4 with two RBIs. Dyer was 2-3 with two RBIs, as well. Ruth also drove in two, and Burt had two hits.

Seward (20-3) was to play in the league tournament this week. Its next scheduled games are Saturday, July 1, starting at noon in Schuyler.
