UBCF just misses first win of summer

The Utica/Beaver Crossing/Friend senior Legion baseball team was three outs from its first win of the 2023 season June 7.

Leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, UBCF issued two walks and a double that gave Cornerstone Bank (Geneva) the 5-4 walk-off win.

The Badgers took the lead in the top of the sixth with a lead-off home run by Keenan Kosek and an RBI double by Jayde Gumaer to drive in Shawn Rathjen.

Rathjen and Cooper Girmus finished the game with two hits each. Girmus took the loss, striking out five in six-plus innings.

The Badgers were at Hebron June 8 and came up short 14-6. Breckan Schluter was 2-4 with two RBIs. Kosek, JB Drake and Schluter each pitched for UBCF.

The Badgers (0-8) were to host Cornerstone Bank June 12 and Hebron June 13. They are scheduled to play in the Cornerstone Classic at York starting Thursday, June 15. The schedule was not available at press time.
