Stanley Henry Wehling was given life by his Creator and was born in East Chicago Heights, Illinois, on March 29, 1942, the child of Harry and Marie (Cote) Wehling.
He was baptized into the Christian faith on April 17, 1942, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in East Chicago Heights. On March 25, 1956 he was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Pasadena, California. His confirmation verse was 2 Peter 3:18 “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
Stan attended kindergarten at St. Paul Lutheran School, grade school at First Lutheran School, then graduated from Los Angeles Lutheran High School in 1960. In 1964, he earned a Degree in Elementary Education from Concordia Teachers College in Seward. In 1969, he earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Texas A&I University.
In college, he met Paula Mueller. They were married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Dale on July 26, 1964. His first Call was to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he served as teacher and principal at Trinity Lutheran School. While living in Texas, they were blessed with four children.
Stan went on to serve at Zion Lutheran School in Palmyra, Missouri, from 1975 – 1986, Bremen Lutheran School in Bremen, Kansas, (which later became Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Marysville, Kansas,) from 1986 – 1996, and St. Paul Lutheran School in Ogallala from 1996 – 2005.
After 41 years of service, Stan and Paula retired and moved to rural Pleasant Dale and enjoyed living the country life. He was honored to serve as a Student Teacher Supervisor and a member of the Board of Regents at Concordia University, Nebraska.
Stan enjoyed traveling, gardening, good music and a good joke. He believed strongly in the mission of the Lutheran school and the centrality of the Word of God in education. He considered his wife and family to be his greatest blessings and his first priority.
Stan was blessed with 82 years of life in this world and 60 years of marriage to Paula. He was called to his heavenly home on Jan. 16, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Joshua.
He is survived by his wife, his brother, Donald, of Oceanside, California, his sister, Ethel, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, his children Andrew and wife Miriam of Lawrence, Kansas, Rachel and husband Joel Symmank of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Deborah Gebhardt of Seward, and Lois and husband Sam Eatherton of Clayton, Missouri, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 24, from 3 – 8 p.m. at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward with a gathering of family and friends from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Dale with interment at the Greenwood Cemetery in Seward.
