The Seward boys’ wrestling team came out of the moratorium with a pair of strong showings, placing fifth at Shelby-Rising City Dec. 28 and winning the Fillmore Central Invite Jan. 4.

Seward had 14 wrestlers place in the top six at FC, led by champion Aidan Summa at 215 pounds. Summa was 5-0 with four pins, including one in the final. His fifth win was a technical fall.

“We had a tough finals round,” Coach Andy Sistek said. “There were some really tough matches. It was a team effort to get the championship.”

Summa was the only winner, with six Bluejays earning second. They were Jack Langner at 106, Cutler Longacre at 113, Aidan Watts at 132, Kaleb Torres at 138, Caleb Jackson at 150 and Caden Schadwinkel at 190.

Sistek said the day’s success showed the team is capable of doing well. The lineup is finally healthy, he said.

“This was our first championship in a long time,” he said.

The Jays were missing a few wrestlers still at SRC but had Tayden Rasgorshek finish second at 126 pounds. Watts and Torres both placed third.

“It’s hard to do damage without our three state qualifiers,” Sistek said.

Summa, Jackson and Schadwinkel, all of whom made state last year, missed the tournament with injuries and illness.

Sistek said Torres and Watts both had tough brackets. The tournament featured good competition from teams like Burwell, Plainview and SRC, he said.

Seward’s next competition is Saturday, Jan. 11, at Beatrice. Sistek said Creighton Prep, the top team in Class A, is scheduled to be in the field.
