Seward Juniors win four in Omaha

The Seward ZKE Storage Legion juniors went 4-1 in the Battle of Omaha June 15-18 after beating Waverly June 13.

In the six-inning 10-6 win over Waverly, Seward pounded 12 hits. Brendon Ruth was 3-3 and stole four bases. Brycen Burt, Cale Gardiner, Kyle Riley and Karson Dyer had two hits each, and Riley drove in two.

Burt was the winning pitcher, going two innings and striking out two. Conner Sveeggen and Dyer each pitched, as well.

Seward opened the Battle of Omaha against IL Dynasty Black 2025 June 15 and lost 9-5. Burt, Riley and Sveeggen had two hits each, with Burt hitting a double. Five different hitters drove in a run each.

Burt and Riley combined for six innings on the mound and struck out six.

In the day’s second game, Seward defeated the Gillette Rustlers 3-2, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth.

Burt and Bostyn Happ had two hits each, and Cale Gardiner drove in two runs.

On day two, Seward opened play against Bennington and led 6-0 before Bennington got on the board.

Burt was 3-5 with two RBIs for Seward, and Sveeggen was 3-3 with one driven in. Quinn Berner drove in three, and Happ, Ruth, Gardiner, Lindau and Dyer had two hits each.

Dyer struck out three in three innings.

Seward came back with an 8-0 win over Ranger BB, led by Sveeggen’s two doubles and three RBIs. Burt pitched all five innings and struck out three.

In the final game of the tournament for Seward, the juniors defeated Westview 9-1 June 17. Brendon Ruth was 2-4 with a double and drove in three runs. Gardiner was 2-3 with two RBIs, Dyer and Burt were each 2-3 and Riley drove in two.

Ruth pitched all five innings and struck out five.

Seward (13-3) was to host Valparaiso June 19 and Ashland June 20 before visiting Roncalli for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday, June 21.

On Friday, June 23, the team will host Beatrice at 5:30 p.m. Seward is at Fairbury Saturday, June 24, at noon, and at Hastings Sunday, June 25, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
