Seward softball opened postseason play Oct. 2 with a 12-0 win over Schuyler in the opening round of subdistricts.

The Jays played Crete in the subdistrict final, and beat the Cardinals 15-3.

In the win over Schuyler, the Bluejays drew 12 walks and had two hits, triples by Lauren Frihauf and Lovely Hibbert. Bell Herring pitched all three innings and struck out six.

The win over Crete saw the Jays pound 13 hits, including two home runs each by Hibbert and Mckenna Sides. Hibbert finished the game 2-2 with four RBIs, and Sides was 2-3 with five RBIs. Sides also pitched the three innings for the win.

Seward (24-5) will host Waverly in the district final Saturday, Oct. 7. The first game of the best-of-three series starts at 11 a.m.

SHS finished the regular season with wins over Waverly 8-4 and Aurora 12-4 Sept. 25 and 26. Coach Shawn Carr said the Jays played very well against Waverly, recording a home run by Lovely Hibbert and nine strikeouts from Mckenna Sides.

“It was huge to get the win,” Carr said.

Seward was in control from start to finish against Aurora. Hibbert tied the school record for hits in a game with five. Lauren Frihauf hit a home run and drove in four, as well.

The Jays played the Central Conference tournament Sept. 28 and took care of business in an 11-1 win over Lexington to open the day. SHS then defeated York 13-3 to set up a clash against defending state champion Grand Island Northwest. The Vikings were too much for the Jays, winning 11-3.

“They took advantage of errors,” Carr said. “We needed one hit, and it didn’t happen.”

Coral Collins led the team with two hits in the game.

“Runner-up is still good,” Carr said.”
