Centennial volleyball saw a busy week bookended by Wilber-Clatonia. The Broncos went 2-3 in their Southern Nebraska Conference tournament matches.

Competition began with the Wolverines Oct. 12. Centennial won the match 25-21, 25-17, led by eight kills from Kate Breitkreutz.

Coach Alex Anstine said the Broncos had to come from behind in the first set and responded well.

In addition to Breitkreutz at the net, Tyler Opfer finished with six kills and 11 digs.

In match two Oct. 12, CHS fell to Exeter-Milligan-Friend 25-15, 25-16.

“We didn’t play very well,” Anstine said.

The team hit -.026 in the match and recorded just 15 kills. Jaci Prigge and Opfer had four each. Opfer and Molly Fehlhafer each picked up 11 digs on defense.

The loss dropped Centennial into a round-robin-type competition with the other conference teams who lost in the first or second rounds. CHS played Sandy Creek Oct. 13 and lost 25-15, 25-18. Anstine said she saw good things from the Broncos in the match.

Opfer led the way with nine kills and 10 digs, with Fehlhafer picking up 13 digs, as well. Meg Hoffschneider delivered 18 assists in the match.

The match against David City, a 25-18, 25-8 loss Oct. 13, started well, but the wheels came off in the second set, Anstine said.

“We couldn’t get anything going,” she said.

The team hit .019, led by three kills from Prigge.

Centennial finished the week with a rematch against WCHS, the fourth time the two teams have played this season. This time, the Wolverines came out on top 24-26, 25-16, 25-12.

“Wilber served aggressively and we couldn’t pass as well as we usually do,” Anstine said.

Opfer put down nine kills for the Broncos and picked up 14 digs, one of three Broncos to reach double figures. Fehlhafer had 17 and Hoffschneider added 12 digs to go with 22 set assists.

The final week of the regular season will see Centennial (7-21) play two triangulars. The first, Oct. 20, will be at H&H with Fillmore Central. Centennial will host the other Thursday, Oct. 22, starting at 5 p.m. with Tri County and David City.

Subdistricts are scheduled to start Monday, Oct. 26. Seeding and assignments will be released Thursday, Oct. 22.
