Starting Oct. 1, Seward Wellness Center members will be asked to pay 7.5% sales tax on top of their monthly or annual memberships.
The city has not overlooked the state-required sales tax on center memberships, but when opening rates were set last year, those taxes were rolled into the total charge, making tidy whole-dollar numbers for people to pay. More about this is in the Sept. 23 Independent.
This year, the Black Hills Corporation Foundation awarded $165,000 through 72 grants benefiting volunteer and combination fire departments across its service territory. The grants are expected to positively impact residents in 72 communities across seven states. Included was a grant to the Milford Volunteer Fire Department. Find out more in the Sept. 23 SCI.
The Flatwater Film Festival will be Sept. 25-27 at the Rivoli Theatre in Seward. The festival is an annual event committed to bringing together established and first-time filmmakers from across Nebraska to celebrate their art.
The Garland American Legion will host breakfast Sunday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. A free-will offering will be accepted. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs and biscuits and gravy.
The Art of the Stitch Quilt Walk will be Sunday, Sept. 27, from 3 – 5 p.m. at the Seward United Methodist Church, showcasing quilts from family and friends of United Women in Faith. There will be a special presentation of “Quilts in Nebraska” by Dr. Patricia Cox Crews at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The public is invited.
The Seward Post 4755 American Legion Auxiliary will host a Fourth Sunday Meal Sunday, Sept. 27, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the VFW Post, 243 S. Ninth St. A meal with a Mediterranean flavor will be offered. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $6 for veterans and $6 for kids age 9 and under. The public is invited. The event is a fundraiser for VFW improvements.

Eventide offers a grief support group online, helpful for many people processing a loss. Unique Dynamics of Grief is a new monthly online support group for those facing the unique challenges of being a younger griever. Members of this group will meet every fourth Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. To enroll in a grief group, contact a bereavement coordinator.
