The Seward County girls’ wrestling team was at the Flatwater Fracas in Grand Island Dec. 15 and 16 and went 3-4 in its duals, finishing seventh of 14 teams.

“It was a tough dual tournament,” Coach Doug Theobald said.

He said the wrestlers faced tough competition. Seward beat Grand Island JV, Lincoln East and Kearney and lost to Lexington, Norfolk, Minden and Garden City.

“We saw some things to work on,” Theobald said. “Garden City is really good.”

Annaliese Sistek (140), JennaRae Hallsted (145) and Ava Rediger (130) won five matches each. Rediger’s wins were all by pin, and Sistek won four by pin.

The team has one competition left before the Christmas break. It will be at Weeping Water for a dual tournament Friday, Dec. 22, starting at 10 a.m.

“The girls embrace the competition,” Theobald said. “They’ve really come together as a team. It’s good to see them gel together, especially with the new girls from last year. They’re very much a team.”

Week of Dec. 13

The Seward County girls’ wrestling team had a good week, with two dual wins and a tournament champion.

Seward opened with dual wins over Fairbury 48-27 and Fillmore Central 71-12 Dec. 7. The team then headed to Crete Dec. 9 for a tournament filled with tough competition, Coach Doug Theobald said.

Lauren Frihauf, a sophomore at 110 pounds, won the tournament title, going 3-0 with two pins.

The other two finalists, JennaRae Hallsted at 145 pounds and Ava Rediger at 130 pounds, finished second.

Mia Cobian (125), Evelyn Theobald (135) and Annaliese Sistek (140) finished in fourth place.

“It was a really good week,” Coach Theobald said. “We’re learning what the expectations are and how to compete.”

He said some of the girls who were on the mat in the duals and at Crete had not wrestled a live match before.
