Although the Centennial baseball team came up short in its two games last week, the Broncos are seeing improvement, Coach Brian Sams said.

The week opened with a 12-0 loss to St. Paul/Palmer March 28. Keenan Kosek had Centennial’s lone hit in the game. He was also the starting pitcher and struck out six in 3.2 innings. Devin Slawynk, Shawn Rathjen and Conner Clouse also pitched for CHS.

The Broncos scored two runs in the first inning against Twin River March 30 and held the lead until the third when TR scored five. Twin River added four in the fourth, five in the fifth and four in the sixth, while Centennial put up one in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth for an 18-7 final.

Coach Brian Sams said the Broncos played well for about three innings.

“We have to get mentally tougher,” he said.

Ben Sams was 2-3 with three RBIs for Centennial. Clouse was 2-2 with a run scored, and Rathjen, Micah Richters and Slawnyk added RBIs.

“A lot hit the ball well,” Coach Sams said. “Bryson Hornbacher had a couple right at people.”

He said the defense made good plays throughout the game, as well.

Richters, Slawnyk and Hornbacher combined for the six innings on the mound. Slawnyk struck out four in his four innings of work.

The Broncos (0-3) were to play at Fairbury April 3 and head to Seward Thursday, April 6, for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Coach Sams said the goal is to be focused and carry that into the game.
