CHS girls enter SNC as top seed

Snow last Monday and Tuesday canceled a game for Centennial, but the Broncos played two in the week anyway.

The CHS girls headed to Thayer Central Jan. 29 to play the Titans and brought home a 49-39 win.

“It went well,” Coach Jake Polk said. “We knew it would be a tough battle and that Thayer Central would be amped up.”

The last trip to Hebron saw the Centennial volleyball team beat the Titans in the district final for a trip to state.

“But we wanted it bad, too,” Polk said.

Kierra Green came off the bench to score 11 points and lead the offense. Daylee Dey added 10. Jaci Opfer and Asia Nisly notched eight rebounds each.

Polk said the game, which was a physical one, didn’t have a lot of flow because of fouls. Centennial was able to make free throws down the stretch.

“You have to hit pressure free throws in tight games,” Polk said. “The only way to be poised is to play in that environment.”

Centennial finished the week with a make-up game against Nebraska Christian Jan. 30. Polk said he was nervous going into the game because NC is an unfamiliar opponent.

“They have a nice team,” he said.

CHS didn’t start the game well and trailed 15-12 after the first quarter. The Broncos outscored NCHS 17-10 in the second quarter and held them to eight points in the second half.

“In the second quarter we were able to knock down shots and regain our mojo,” Polk said.

Kate Hirschfeld led the team with 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.

The Broncos (17-1) are the No. 1 seed in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament. CHS beat Fillmore Central 49-38 Feb. 2 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals, in which CHS will play Thayer Central, are set for Thursday, Feb. 4, at 5:45 p.m., with the finals Saturday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m., all at Centennial.
