BREAKING: Four people were killed in an accident on Interstate 80 at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The York County Sheriff’s Department said three males and one female were pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. Paul Vrbka with the York County Sheriff’s Department said the deceased were all from Colorado. Their identities are not being released at this time, as the sheriff’s department is attempting to notify next of kin.

Vrbka said the accident involved a pickup and a semi in the westbound lanes just east of the mile marker 363 bridge. He said the pickup was eastbound  when the driver lost control, crossed the median, went into the westbound lanes and was hit on the passenger side by the semi.

Three of the people killed had to be extracted from the pickup while the fourth was ejected.

The cause of the accident, Vrbka said, was a combination of speed and icy road conditions, as it pertained to the pickup.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Dispatched to the scene were the York Fire Department, the York County Sheriff’s Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, Waco Fire and Rescue and Utica Fire and Rescue.

Also dispatched was a Star Care helicopter, which was already on its way when responders on the ground said those services would no longer be needed as all the people had been pronounced dead.

Additional ambulance services were also told to turn around as there were no transports to the hospital needed.

The state patrol closed the westbound lanes immediately following the accident. The interstate was reopened to traffic shortly before 10 a.m.
