Young Malcolm squad wins two

One week into the 2023 campaign, the Malcolm volleyball team knows it needs to be more consistent.

At times, the team shows signs of being the top five program that qualified for the state tournament a year ago. Other times, they look very much like a team with several first-year varsity players still growing into their roles.

The No. 4 Clippers opened on Aug. 24 with a home match against Raymond Central. After the Mustangs came out hot in the first set, Malcolm settled down and rallied back to win, 25-27, 25-19, 25-13, 25-10.

Halle Dolliver was one of three Clippers with double-digit kills. The sophomore had 18 while junior Callie Schroeder added 14 and Laurel Johnson slammed down 12 kills. Johnson – a 6-2 freshman – also had four blocks.

“Some of our less experienced players have to step up this year,” Malcolm coach Amber Dolliver said. “We saw some good things from them in the opener. We just need to see it consistently. They’re learning that the game moves much faster and is far more physical at the varsity level.”

Following the graduation of Lauryn England – a three-year starter at setter – the coaches are being creative in filling the hole left by her departure. Using a two-setter system, McKenna Powell has setting duties when she plays front row. When Powell goes to the back row, Camry Sehi comes in to set. The duo combined for 40 assists in the season opener.

“We’re still trying to figure out that position,” Coach Dolliver said. “We have four girls that are fighting for it. It could be a while before we have it settled.”

The Malcolm serve was working well on opening night as the team combined for 20 service aces. Jenna Schweitzer led the way with seven, while Dolliver and Abby Zegar each dropped in five aces.

“Our serving was great that night,” Dolliver said. “However, it was awful over the weekend. We need to be consistent and aggressive.”

During the weekend, Malcolm traveled to Grand Island to compete in the Bill Marshall Classic. It was the third year the Clippers competed at the event held at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds.

Malcolm opened against Class B No. 7 Grand Island Northwest and won in straight sets, 25-19, 29-27. Dolliver led the way with 15 kills and had a dozen digs.

The second match of the day was a rematch of last year’s state tournament opener in which Gothenburg eliminated Malcolm in four sets. It was more of the same this year as the No. 3 Swedes made quick work of the Clippers in a 25-17, 25-14 sweep.

Malcolm (2-1) swept Blair (0-1) 25-20, 25-12, 25-14 Aug. 29 before visiting conference foe, Plattsmouth (2-2) on Thursday, Aug. 31.

“We’ve got a lot room for improvement,” Dolliver said. “Our serving needs to be more consistent. Our serve receive and passing needs to get cleaned up. Plenty to work on this week.”
