SHS boys fall to Class B No. 1

It’s tough to play the top team in your class. It’s tough to do so coming off two weeks of scattered practices.

The combination led to a 78-38 loss for the Seward boys at the hands of Class B’s top team, undefeated Crete.

“Crete is a really nice team and they’re undefeated for a reason,” SHS Coach Trevor Menke said. “We just weren’t near efficient enough offensively to keep the game tight.”

Seward trailed 19-9 after the first quarter and 40-18 at halftime. The game reached a running clock (one team ahead by at least 40 points) with 5:46 to play in the fourth quarter.

Crete’s Aidan McDowell and Trace Egge led all scorers with 14 points each. Kameron Dyer led Seward with 10 points.

“With the conference tournament coming next week, we really need to shore up some of our errors we’re making and string together some really good practices,” Menke said.

Seward (4-7) opened the conference tournament Jan. 23 at Aurora and lost to the Huskies 54-36. SHS will play again on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. against Lakeview at Aurora High. The championship game is also Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. at Aurora.
