Miller leads Bluejays with state gold

After last year, Kelsey Miller said, she was motived. She hit the second-to-last hurdle in the 100-meter finals in 2024 and finished second.

“I wanted to come back and do better,” she said.

May 22 she did. The Seward senior ran a clean race and beat the field for the 100-meter hurdle gold in Class B.

“It feels pretty good,” she said.

She has focused on the hurdles during her senior season, and her times reflect that. She had the second-fastest time in the state, 14.39 seconds, in the district meet last week. While her time of 14.44 at state earned the gold, she said she always wants to do better.

“The emphasis was on the drive between the hurdles,” she said.

The SHS senior will compete at North Dakota State next year in the hurdles. While she said she loves to hate the 300s, she’s not sure how she’ll feel about the 400-meter hurdles at the college level.

She said the competition in the hurdles, including at Seward High, was tough. Teammates Hayden Minchow and Kendall Miller push her in practice.

“Hayden and Kendall work their tails off. We race against each other in practice,” Kelsey said.

Running the 4x100-meter relay before the hurdle finals wasn’t a big deal, she said.

“Half the time I’m running from race to race throughout the season,” she said with a smile.
