Records don’t matter when Seward plays York. This year’s clash featured the 7-0 Bluejays and the 5-2 Dukes.
Seward used early turnovers to take the lead and pulled away late to win 26-0.
“Big rivalry win for the Bluejays on senior night,” Coach Jamie Opfer said. “I’m really proud of our seniors and the way that they have represented our team and school this year.”
Seward drew first blood after an Ed Knott interception on York’s first offensive possession.
“It gave us a short field and then Eddison was able to punch it in on our first offense possession,” Opfer said.
On York’s third possession, it was Kayson Salyer’s turn to grab a pick. Seward scored its second touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Tresten Hass to Kolton Loos.
The offense struggled to maintain traction in the second and third quarters, he said. The Jays got moving again in the fourth quarter. Peyton Else scored on a three-yard run, and Jack Vyhnalek caught a 22-yard pass from Hass for the final score.
“York has a disciplined, well-coached team, and those early turnovers were really the difference in the game,” Opfer said.
Knott finished with 62 yards rushing on 14 carries, and Hass added 56 yards on nine attempts. Hass also completed 16 of 26 passes for 153 yards, with Lathan Janousek catching six for 60.
On defense, Knott grabbed two interceptions. Keyan Schadwinkel recorded six solo tackles and five assists.
“We’ve got a lot to be proud of so far this season, but we can’t lose sight of what’s in front of us, stay in the moment and get better each and every day,” Opfer said. “There are a lot of things that we need to continue to work on this week to make sure that we are doing all we can to become the best team we can.”
The Jays (8-0) will finish the regular season at Crete (1-7) Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff at Doane University is set for 7 p.m.
