Eagles down Whippets to advance to championship game

Milford outscored Minden 27-7 in the second quarter and held on for a 67-61 win in the Class C1 semifinals March 7.

 

The Eagles trailed 20-12 after the first quarter but started the second on an 18-2 run. Izzy Yeackley made one of her five three pointers to give the Eagles a 23-22 lead and hit another to stretch the lead to four.

 

Yeackley got the scoring started with a triple 40 seconds into the game. Minden, however, ended the quarter on an 11-2 run.

 

In the second quarter, Shayla Rautenberg got the run started with a layup 26 seconds into the frame. She finished with eight of her 14 in the period. Yeackley connected on three three-pointers, and Ayla Roth chipped in six. Abby Crabtree pushed the lead to 12 with an offensive putback in the closing seconds.

 

Both teams scored 15 in the third quarter, and Minden cut the lead to five several times in the fourth but couldn't get closer.

 

Yeackley led the Eagles with 16 points. Rautenberg and Ashlynn Miller each added 14 in the paint, and Roth scored 13. Rautenberg finished her double double with 12 rebounds. Roth delivered seven assists.

 

The Eagles (25-1) will get a rematch with Lincoln Christian in tomorrow's Class C1 championship game at 11 a.m. The Crusaders handed the Eagles their only loss of the season by two points in the holiday tournament.

 

The Milford girls' basketball team won its first ever game at the state tournament March 5, beating Arlington 61-40 to advance to the Class C1 semifinals tomorrow. Yeackley led MHS with 16 points. Roth scored 13, Rautenberg 12 and Taylor Oldfield 11. MHS went 9-23 from three. Rautenberg almost had a triple double with 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots.
