Centennial volleyball closed its season Oct. 27 in the subdistrict semifinal. The Broncos beat Cedar Bluffs 24-26, 25-20, 25-11, 25-23 in the opening round, then lost to Freeman 25-13, 25-20, 25-8. CHS finished with a record of 4-25.
In the win over Cedar Bluffs, senior Cheyenne Tonniges recorded 22 kills, with junior Tyler Opfer adding 12. The Broncos served 13 aces, with three each coming from Hurley Harroun, Hannah Luebbe, Opfer and Tonniges. Opfer also picked up 29 digs, with Meg Hoffschneider adding 16. Luebbe and Dakota Butzke each delivered 19 assists.
The offense wasn't as prolific against Freeman, with the Broncos notching 13 kills in the match. Hoffschneider recorded 16 digs.
In the final week of the regular season, CHS lost both games of a triangular Oct. 23, falling to Adams Central 25-17, 25-17 and to Fillmore Central 25-21, 21-25, 25-20. CHS played David City Oct. 24 and lost 25-11, 25-21, 25-8.
"I thought we did a good job. We put up a good fight against Adams Central," Coach Alex Anstine said. "Against Fillmore Central, we struggled to control our side of the net. Service errors and mental mistakes hurt us."
Against Adams Central, Opfer led the team with four kills. She and Hoffschneider each had six digs, and she and Tonniges each served two aces.
In the match against Fillmore Central, Tonniges and Opfer had eight kills each. Andrea Gumaer was 11-11 at the service line with an ace. Hoffschneider had 16 digs, with Opfer adding 15.
CHS finished with 16 kills in the loss to David City, led by Tonniges with six. Luebbe delivered 12 assists.
"They are a very talented team," Anstine said. "In the third set, nothing was clicking. It was not our night."
She said sophomore middle hitter Jaclynn Prigge had her best match of the season against the Scouts.
