CHS runners better times at state meet

Centennial cross country acquitted itself well at the Class D state meet Oct. 22. Although none of the Broncos brought home hardware, Coach Rob Johansen said the experience was great for the runners.

“All of them return next year where they can set new goals of getting back to state and improving,” he said.

Clinton Turnbull finished 17th, just eight seconds away from the 15th-place medal. He now holds the No. 6 spot on the school’s top 10 state performances.

“Clinton ran really well and was determined to give himself a shot at a medal,” Johansen said.

Camden Winkelman and Matthew Hoops both improved their times from UNK, the coach said. He said Winkelman had nothing left at the end of his race. Hoops improved his time by 20 seconds.

“They found out that it’s really tough at the state meet level,” he said.

Garrison Schernikau ran better than he thought he might after missing part of the season with an injury, Johansen said.

Madison Brandenburgh represented the girls and ran a consistent race, Johansen said. She was only one second slower than the UNK meet in September and was 10th among the girls in CHS’s district.

“I still thought she ran a consistent race,” Johansen said.
