Centennial holds off Cougars at home

The Centennial football team “brought its own juice” to the Oct. 2 battle against Conestoga and sent the Cougars home on the short end of a 22-6 score.

“My slogan is ‘BYOJ’ (Bring your own juice) and guys did just that,” Coach Riley Ostendorf said. “Friday was a fun night because it showed the progress we are making every single day. Guys are really starting to see the payoff of our morning weights and just our standard in general.”

Conestoga is a good football team with a tough quarterback, he said. The Bronco defense played its most complete game of the season and held the Cougars out of the endzone for most of the game.

“Our defensive line continues to really control the line of scrimmage and our backend is flying to the football and making plays,” Ostendorf said.

On offense, he said, the Broncos did some good things but made some mistakes that make big differences in a game.

“Parker Perry continues to make good decisions from the quarterback position and we are getting great reps out of Tripp Hawley, Kellen Naber, and Chase Robinson running the football,” Ostendorf said. “Ryan Fehlhafer continues to be a swiss army knife on offense for us. Kade McFadden and Owen Naber continue to give us big plays in the passing game.”

The Broncos had three different players find the end zone against Conestoga. McFadden scored on a one-yard pass, Fehlhafer on a 33-yard pass and Hawley on a 73-yard run.

Lane Johnson led the defense with four solo tackles and eight assists. Fehlhafer finished with six solo tackles and five assists, and Hawley had five solo stops and four assists.

Ostendorf said the team is doing the little things required to be successful and seeing the results is a bonus.

“As we are stressing, we have to continue to grind and trust the process. We get 24 hours to celebrate a W then we are back to work. We had a great turnout Saturday morning for our weight room session which shows our commitment and mindset,” he said.

Centennial (3-3) is on the road Friday, Oct. 9, at Freeman (3-3). The Falcons, which lost to Sutton Oct. 2, have good athletes and solid lines, the coach said, emphasizing that the Broncos must have a great week of practice.

“It’s never easy to go on the road and get a district W but we will prepare the right way,” he said. “Our backs are against the wall, and we want to be a playoff team.”
