It's homecoming week at SHS and CU

Seward High and Concordia University will host homecoming activities throughout the week.

Dress-up day themes for SHS are:

   Tuesday: Hawaiian/ Beach day (pink)

   Wednesday: Mountaineer/Cowboy day (green)

   Thursday: Americana Day (red, white and blue)

   Friday: Fourth of July City: Blue and Gold Day

The annual homecoming parade will begin Friday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at the north end of the west drive of the high school, moving through the Ridgewood parking lot, east on Pinewood Avenue to the elementary school before returning to the high school football field for a pep rally.

Speaking of homecoming, Centennial crowned its royalty for 2018. Aly Timmerman was selected as queen Sept. 14, and Jack Hirschfeld was named king.

What's happening today?

Figure out the iPad - Seward Memorial Library will host a computer class called iPad Basics Monday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. Bring your iPad to class to learn hints and tips for use, as well as information about apps you may want to download. Register for this free class at the library, online at www.sewardlibrary.org or by calling (402) 643-3318.

Speaker served in Washington, to speak at CU - Concordia University will host Tim Goeglein Monday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Thom Leadership Education Center auditorium. Goeglein’s presentation is titled “Faith in the Halls of Power: Major Issues Facing American Christians in 21st Century America.” It will touch on his experience in both the political and religious spheres and how to welcome God’s role in the public square. Following the lecture, there will be time to ask questions as well as meet the presenter. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Raffle to help Special Olympics teams - The Seward County Special Olympics teams will conduct a fundraiser in cooperation with Special Olympics Nebraska. Participating teams from across the state will receive 100 percent of the ticket sales for their respective teams. First place will be two 2019 Nebraska football season tickets on the 50-yard line. Second place will be two round-trip tickets to any Southwest Airlines destination. Third place will be a 50-inch flat-screen TV. To purchase tickets, contact Donna Eiting at (402) 641-1945), Louise Warnsholz at (402) 643-2337 or any Seward County Special Olympics athlete. Deadline to buy tickets is Wednesday, Oct. 10. Entrants must be at least 18 years old. The drawing will be Wednesday, Nov. 7.

September is prevention awareness month - September is Military Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Art, photography on display in gallery - Contemporary art and photography by Don E. Smiley is currently on display in the Langworthy Gallery at the Seward Civic Center. One of Smiley’s paintings of World War I pilot Erle Smiley is hanging at the Nebraska Guard Museum in Seward.
