Young Jays improve through week

Four Seward wrestlers earned medals at the Plattsmouth Invitational Jan. 23, and five won matches in a dual against Schuyler Jan. 21.

Coach Bob Core said the Bluejays wrestled better on Saturday at the tournament. With half a team (seven wrestlers instead of 14), the Jays finished eighth in the team standings with 76.5 points.

“We did some good things,” he said.

Trason (113 pounds) and Tristan (138 pounds) Snover each finished second at Plattsmouth. Trason was 2-1 with pins of Matthew Meyer from Grand Island Northwest in 1:25 and Jackson Nielsen of Blair in 1:56. He was pinned by Andrew Nielsen of Plattsmouth in 37 seconds in the final.

Tristan was 3-1, pinning Brody Bashus of Plattsmouth in 4:22, Isaac Nordin of Elkhorn in 1:21 and Ryan Dickey of Omaha Gross in 2:52. In the final, Snover was pinned by Josh Benak of Papillion-LaVista South in 3:02.

Miguel Dubs finished third at 106 pounds. He defeated Easton Ladehoff of Elkhorn 20-3 and pinned Jalen Maher of Auburn in 2:13 but then lost by pin to Walker Moore of Blair in 4:41. He came back to pin Grayson Fries of Grand Island Northwest in 4:40 but lost to Chase Larsen of Plattsmouth 8-4.

Logan Craig was also third at 160 pounds. He pinned Blake Black of Falls City in 39 seconds but lost to Damian Green of Fairbury 5-3. He beat Jacob Cutsor of Ralston 15-2 and pinned Dan Jones of Papillion-LaVista South in 2:10.

“Miguel and Logan have been consistent,” Core said.

At Schuyler, Dubs, Tristan Snover, Craig, Kenneth Sanchez (182 pounds) and Cody Brose (285 pounds) won their matches by pin. The Bluejays lost the dual 52-30, however.

With injured wrestlers and open weights, Core filled in with some junior varsity wrestlers who wrestled well, he said.

Seward was scheduled to host its double dual Thursday, Jan. 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Seward will dual Holdrege, with Crete and Boys Town wrestling each other. The winners will meet in the second set of duals, with the losers to wrestle each other.

Core said Holdrege fills most of the 14 weight classes and will probably be the team to beat. He said Seward matches up well with both Crete and Boys Town.

“We are getting better,” he said. “I like where we are conditioning-wise. We just need to fix some technique.”
