Vernon William Hermann passed away Dec. 26, 2022. He was born on a farm west of Staplehurst on May 1, 1923, to Dora Graham Hermann and William H. Hermann and baptized as an Infant at Zion Lutheran Church, Marysville, Nebraska. He was one of eight children and was seven years old when his father died in June 1930. His nickname “Charlie” came from hired help on the farm.

Vernon attended a rural two-room parochial school at Zion Lutheran. He was confirmed in March 1937 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Seward and graduated from Seward High School in May 1942. Vernon was drafted into the military service during World War II and served in the U.S. Navy from March 1943 – February 1946 during which time he was a pharmacists mate stationed in the Pacific Northwest. During the Korean War 1951-1955, he was active in the Federal Ground Observer Corps for which he received his “Air Wings.” Upon his return to Lincoln in 1946, he attended the University of Nebraska. In December 1947, Vernon accepted temporary employment in the U.S. Postal Service. On Jan. 25, 1948, he married Irene M. Siefert at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln. For a short time, Irene and Vernon lived in North Platte before returning to Lincoln in June 1950.

Vernon served in numerous capacities in the U.S. Postal Service from night clerk to window clerk. After 33 years of postal service, he retired. Upon retirement, Vernon volunteered at the Children’s Zoo Post Office for several years. Vernon was a long-time member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church choir, German Singers of Lincoln and German Sangerchor of Omaha. His hobby was mainly German Stamp collecting and shared many United States stamps with family members in Germany and enjoyed raising roses and holly bushes. Vernon was a 75-year member of the Bennet American Legion, lifetime member of the German America Society in Omaha and was an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

Vernon is survived by his sister, Reona Woodcomb of Lancaster, Massachusetts, along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Laverne Arnold, Neva Axen, Ione Wieler and Geradine Anderson; and brothers, Eldon Hermann and William Hermann.

The funeral service was Jan. 3 at Saint Mark Lutheran Church with burial at Lincoln Memorial Park with military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to St Mark Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Arrangements by Lincoln Colonial Chapel Funeral Home.
