ValDean "Val" Latimer Richards, 76, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully at his brother's home in Irmo, South Carolina, on Dec. 31, 2024.
Born on April 23, 1948, in Norfolk, Val was the second of five children born to the late Latimer John and Laura Koepke Richards. He grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Utica High School with the Class of 1966. He went on to attend Lincoln School of Commerce, where he earned a degree in Business. He enjoyed the many years he worked in accounting positions, and later a variety of other jobs as his health permitted. He always did his best and brought his optimism and kindness to each task.
Val was known for his easygoing nature and genuine interest in people. He was an avid fan of the Nebraska Huskers and also followed Nebraska high school sports closely. Unbeknownst to many, he enjoyed professional wrestling, being a dedicated WWE fan. These interests brought him joy and connection with others.
Throughout his life, Val faced numerous health challenges with quiet strength and resilience. Rather than allowing these difficulties to define him, he used them as a way to connect with and support others. His involvement with the Lincoln Ostomy Association became a meaningful part of his life. As treasurer for many years, Val offered not only his time and skills but also his compassion – always ready to assist new members navigating similar journeys.
Faith played an important role in Val’s journey. Wherever he attended, he was an active member of that congregation. In recent years, he found fellowship and spiritual enrichment through St. Mark's United Methodist Senior Men's Group, regularly attending their gatherings and coffee group. During Val’s final weeks in South Carolina, Val was so appreciative and happy to receive messages and cards from his pastor and friends at St. Mark’s. He loved the camaraderie and shared values provided by that fellowship.
Val is survived by his life partner, Nancy Noha, with whom he shared 50 years. He is survived by three sisters and one brother, Vicki Hermann of Michigan, Virgie Giannetto of Colorado, Vanay (Chuck) Walek of Texas, and Varner (Lynne) Richards of South Carolina. He was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews, always showing interest in their lives and families.
Val was preceded in death by his father, Latimer John Richards; and mother, Laura Koepke Richards; and brother-in-law, Dean Hermann.
Val’s legacy is one of kindness, perseverance and community spirit. Memorial contributions are suggested to Lincoln Ostomy Association, c/o Amy Fairchild, 2321 S 72nd St, Lincoln, NE 68506 or to St Mark’s United Methodist Church, Senior Men’s Group, 8550 Pioneers Blvd, Lincoln, NE 68520.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled Sunday, June 22, at 3 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Bliss Chapel, 8550 Pioneers Blvd, Lincoln, NE 68520.
