A trip to Gering for the District A4 wrestling tournament ended with two state qualifiers for Seward/Milford.
Lauren Frihauf was the district champion at 105 pounds, going 3-0 with two first-period pins. Evelyn Theobald finished as the runner-up at 140 pounds.
“It was a tough district,” Coach Andy Sistek said, adding that he wouldn’t be surprised to see quite a few state medalists come out of it.
Ava Rediger finished one match shy of a return to state at 130 pounds. Sistek said she’d been battling an injury and tried to wrestle through it.
“My hat’s off to her, and my heart sinks for her,” he said.
He was pleased to see Savannah Leiting finish her career on the mat. The senior had missed most of the season with an injury but returned for districts. Sistek said she was rusty but battled through her two matches.
“The younger girls got valuable experience that will help them in the future,” he said.
The girls’ state tournament starts Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. at the CHI Center in Omaha.
Frihauf (38-2) will wrestle Lily Ross of Bellevue East (25-18) in the first round.
Theobald (24-8) will wrestle Alizon Morales of Schuyler (29-18).
