County roads won't be cleared until conditions improve

The Seward County Road Department will not be clearing county roads until weather conditions improve, according to the county commissioners.

"The Seward County Road Department continues to operate under emergency assistance only," said Commissioner Misty Ahmic at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.

"With the persistent wind, frigid temperatures, drifting snow and the poor visibility, they are unable to safely go out and clear roads," Ahmic said.

On Friday evening, the Seward County Sheriff's Office said it would no longer send deputies to assist with stranded motorist calls, only emergencies, until conditions improve.

The Nebraska State Patrol said troopers had responded to more than 200 motorist calls on Friday alone.

In Seward, city crews are focused only on main streets and emergency routes, as blowing and drifting snow quickly recovers these routes as soon as they are cleared. Residential and side streets will be cleared once conditions allow.

Weekend school activities across the county have been cancelled or postponed, and many downtown businesses are closed for the day.

Officials ask residents to stay home and off the roads until the snow is cleared.

Those in an emergency should call 911. Stranded motorists may call *55.
