SHS student sings at state

Singing in front of people is hard. Add to that the atmosphere of a state tournament, and nerves can take over.

Not for Audrey Dobesh, though. The Seward High senior performed the National Anthem at both sessions of the state  bowling championships Feb. 8.

“I was really excited,” she said. “I felt honored to do it.”

She learned about the opportunity during her vocal performance class and sent an audition recording.

She learned in January that she’d been selected to sing.

Dobesh said for the audition she tried to choose a key she was comfortable with. She sang acapella at the championships.

She said she wasn’t nervous “until right when I was about to sing.”

One of the challenges for her was singing the same speed she’d sung for her audition because meet organizers at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln had put together a light show to go along with the National Anthem.

Dobesh said there were twinkling lights for stars to go with some red lights and the flag.

“I looked at the flag the whole time,” she said. “Solo-wise, this was the biggest crowd I’d ever sung for.”

Dobesh said she plans to major in music but has not chosen a college yet. She hopes to be a performer.
