Seward’s boys’ basketball team bookended its week with wins over Schuyler and Waverly.
The Jays hosted Schuyler Jan. 14 and dominated the Warriors 79-22. Schuyler didn’t score more than eight points in a quarter.
“A great team effort with great attitudes for our guys,” Coach Trevor Menke said. “We were proud of our togetherness and commitment to the defensive end. We made the right plays offensively with the ball moving and tallying up several assists.”
Seward finished with 39 rebounds and scored 36 points in the paint. SHS delivered 17 assists, led by Josh Keller with three.
Ed Knott led the team with 16 points, and Jack Vyhnalek added 15 points and nine boards, with Josh Keller scoring 11.
A big first quarter Jan. 18 against Waverly helped push the Jays to the win. SHS outscored the Vikings 14-4 in the opening frame and led 32-18 at halftime en route to a 52-46 win.
“We knew it was going to be a four-quarter game regardless because Waverly is well coached, has an excellent point guard and so much size and strength,” Menke said. “It started with defense once again where this is really buying into right now. “
Tresten Hass led all scorers with 20 points and added three steals. Knott added 12 points and five rebounds.
Seward (5-8) has just one game on the schedule – a visit from Aurora (11-2) Friday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Central Conference tournament starts Monday, Jan. 27.
