SHS boys fall in season opener

While the final score of the boys’ game was 7-0 in Norris’ favor, Coach Nick Holmes said the Bluejays did some things he was happy with. The game was the first time the Jays had played outside and the first time they’d gone 11 on 11, he said.

“I was pretty happy with the way we played,” Holmes said. “The score did not go as well as we hoped, but it’s been a tough spring.”

The Jays did find the net, but the goal was disallowed when the officials ruled it didn’t cross the endline.

Goalkeeper Tyler Lenz played his first game in the net, and Holmes said he made a couple unbelievable saves.

Senior Luke Duol was a pleasant surprise at forward, Holmes said. Junior Zach Ellingson also surprised the coaches in his first game at center back. Holmes said he played a great game.

He has high standards he wants the Bluejay to meet, and the team is on board with that, he said.

“We are trying to create a culture of competition,” he said. “You should never measure on wins and losses. They are an outcome of competing.”

The SHS boys were scheduled to travel to Mount Michael Benedictine March 19 and Waverly March 23.
