SHS boys fall in district championship

For many, the outcome of a 3 vs. 14 game might be assumed a blowout in favor of the three. But other times, seeds don't matter.

The Seward boys' basketball team might have been the 14-seed in the Class B district pairings, but the Bluejays pushed third-seeded Scottsbluff to the limit Feb. 26 before succumbing 49-46 in the B3 district final.

"It was a major grinder," SHS Coach Trevor Menke said. "Both teams really dug in defensively. I thought our kids really fought their tails off and were focused on the right things.

"We didn't play perfect but our kids didn't fear the moment. That's the best our team has stayed in the moment all season."

Seward led 9-7 after the first quarter, but Scottsbluff held a 20-15 lead at halftime. Seward fought back and led by three in the fourth quarter before the Bearcats made three crucial three-pointers to swing the momentum back.

After being shut out in the first quarter, Kameron Dyer came back to lead all scorers with 15 points. Finn Hochstein added nine, all in the second half. Hank Hughes scored eight, Tresten Hass six, Jack Vyhnalek five and Karson Dyer 3.

The Jays end the season with an 11-13 record. Seward will graduate Kameron Dyer, Finn Hochstein, Hank Hughes, Matthew Wegman and Conner Matzke.
