Seward football was at York Oct. 17 in a battle for Highway 34 bragging rights.

The Bluejays brought home the win, beating the Dukes 42-16. Seward had 14 points on the board before York cracked the scoring column with a second-quarter field goal.

“York does a lot of things that challenge you in a number of different ways in all three phases of the game,” SHS Coach Jamie Opfer said.

The Jays saw an efficient offense throughout the game. Quarterback Kayson Salyer completed 14 of 18 attempts for 205 yards and three touchdowns.

“Kayson just keeps getting better and better each week, and I’m really proud of the progress that he’s made this season,” Opfer said.

Salyer completed scoring strikes to Jack Vyhnalek twice and once to Karson Dyer. Peyton Else, who gained 171 yards on 20 carries, scored two touchdowns.

Kyle Riley, a three-year starting lineman, got in on the scoring, too. Opfer said they put him in at quarterback near the goalline in the fourth quarter, and he scored on a seven-yard run.

Defensively, Deklan Lindau notched two sacks, and Riley and Cardin Goracke had one each.

“Our defensive line and linebackers were able to put pressure on the York quarterback and put them in challenging down and distance situations at times throughout the night,” Opfer said.

Lindau finished the night with six solo tackles and five assists. Dyer had five solo tackles and six assists, with Kolten Green adding four solo stops and three assists.

The Bluejays (6-2) will finish the regular season at home Friday, Oct. 24, against Crete (2-6). The Cardinals lost to Grand Island Northwest 27-21 Oct. 17.
