Richard Lee Bennett was born May 21, 1942, in Harlan, Iowa, to Kenneth E. and Eva Laura (Crandall) Bennett and passed away Jan. 19, 2021, in Seward, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 29 days. He attended grade school in Shenandoah, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Schuyler, with the Class of 1960.

Dick joined the United States Navy in 1961 and served for 4 ½ years, stationed at Coronado Island, San Diego, California. He returned home to Seward in 1965, where he worked at The Bakery with his dad, Bob Bennett.

Dick met the love of his life, Lucille Masek in 1965, and they were married Oct. 28, 1967, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Dick and Lucy were blessed with five wonderful children, Stephannie (Chris) Schmitt, Christopher (Heather) Bennett, Thomas (Jeanette) Bennett, Jason (Kami) Bennett and Kierra Bennett. In 1981, Dick and Lucy purchased The Bakery in Seward and operated it for 33 amazing years. Besides working at The Bakery every morning, Dick worked full time as a clerk at The United States Post Office in Lincoln, retiring after 28 years.

Dick leaves to mourn his passing, Lucy, his wife of 53 years; his five children; 20 grandchildren; mother, Dorothy Bennett; brother, Russell (Monia) Bennett; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Bennett, and sister, Peg Jones.

A funeral service was Jan. 23 with a graveside service and interment at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, plants and statues, memorial contributions are suggested to the Bennett family for future designations. Condolences may be left for the family at www.zabkafuneralhome.com.
