Records fall for Milford golf

It was a week of falling records for the Milford golf team.

The Eagles opened competition May 5 at Sutton where they were the meet champion with a 299, a school record. Zephyr Mowinkel broke his school record with a 67 to win.

Coach Chaise Vegas described it as an “unbelievable day on the course for everyone.”

In addition to Mowinkel’s school record score, Landon Roth (74), Zane Jackson (77) and Trayton Nelson (81) each shot their career best rounds. They finished third, fifth and 11th, respectively. Brodie Roth finished in 12th place with an 81.

The team’s score broke the previous record of 306, which was by the 1998 state champion team, Vegas said.

“A couple weeks ago, I told you it will be something special when Zephyr’s putts start going in; well, they started going in,” Vegas said.

Not only did he break the school record, he extended his career wins record.

“He’s been striking the ball so well this year but the scores haven’t really showed and now’s he’s starting to see the ball go in the hole and gaining a bunch of confidence,” Vegas said.

Landon Roth is starting to find the fairway more often, which makes his approach shots easier. He’s turned around his performance on the greens, as well, which has lowered his scores.

“We’ve preached pace all year and avoiding three-putts, and all five kids putted really well,” Vegas said. “The greens were slower which allowed the boys to be a little more aggressive on the greens without having 10-foot comeback putts if they missed.”

On May 7, the Eagles were at Hebron for the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament where the team took the champion honors with a 319, and Mowinkel finished second with a 72.

Landon Roth was third in 75, and Jackson was eighth in 82. Nelson shot a 90, and Brodie Roth carded a 100.

Vegas said the Eagles saw a couple new teams that have posted some good scores earlier in the season.

“We tried to play our own game and not concentrate on what the other teams were doing,” he said.

Vegas was happy to see the golfers play good rounds back to back.

Milford was to compete at the Lincoln Christian Invite May 11 and then host Seward for a dual Wednesday, May 13, at 3:30 p.m.

Districts are Monday, May 18, at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln. Milford is in the B2 tournament.

“I hope the momentum continues to roll as the season winds down,” Vegas said. “It’s been a fun year and we hope to keep the head on straight and finish strong down the stretch.”
