Highway 15 to open for southbound traffic

Traffic routes will change once again on May 15 as work progresses on the Highway 15 reconstruction project through downtown Seward.

The Nebraska Department of Roads and Constructors Inc., the contractor on the project, will open the southbound lane of traffic beginning at Roberts Street and moving south toward Izaak Walton Road.

The northbound lane will remain closed, and Second Street will be used as the detour.

“This is the transition to the new normal,” said City Administrator Greg Butcher, as the northbound detour will remain in effect for several more months.

While the change will open up part of the intersection at Highways 15 and 34, a segment of 15 further north from Bradford to 34 will be closed as the project moves north through town.

After that, the next stretch will close between Bradford and Park Avenue.

Butcher said crews will skip over the Seward Street intersection for now and pick up there after July 4.

“This project has been very highly coordinated and choreographed,” City Engineer Mike Oneby said. “They’re doing a great job.”

Butcher said the project is on schedule. Updates will continue to be given on the city’s social media pages, and businesses will be alerted to changes in their areas as the project continues.
