Dr. Mitch Kubicek will be the next superintendent of Milford Public Schools.

The MPS Board of Education unanimously approved his hiring Jan. 10, the same night current superintendent Kevin Wingard submitted his notice of retirement.

Kubicek was hired as Milford’s Director of Learning in 2016. He is responsible for supporting teachers and students through professional development, assessments and curriculum development.

He said his time as an Eagle so far has been a great ride.

“I’ve been blessed to work with great leaders and just try to learn from them,” he said.

His new contract will take effect July 1.

Wingard expressed his appreciation to the board for considering Kubicek for the superintendent role.

“Thank you for hiring Mitch. It will make a huge difference with Milford, knowing our culture and expectations,” Wingard said.

Board President Dave Welsch said Kubicek will offer consistency for the staff and students at Milford.

“We’ve got a good thing going here,” Welsch said.

Kubicek received the Al Kilgore Award of Excellence in July 2023 for his outstanding leadership in curriculum, instruction and assessment.

The award was given by the Nebraska Council of School Administrators, with a nomination from the Nebraska Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Kubicek began his career as a high school science teacher and coach in Overton in 2000.

He then became Overton’s preK-12 principal before moving to Dorchester in 2008, serving as principal until 2011, then as superintendent. He began his current role at Milford in 2016.

Kubicek earned his undergraduate degree in science education from Hastings College and his master’s in educational leadership and administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

He holds a specialist degree and a doctorate in education from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
