The 2022-23 basketball season came to an end for the Seward boys’ team Feb. 28, when Platteview ended its dream of a state championship run.

The Jays lost to the Trojans 63-37 in the district final.

The Jays got off to a slow start, scoring just two points in the first quarter and trailing by 15 at the end of the period.

Senior Drew Covalt led the team with 13 points in his final game as a Bluejay. Fellow senior AJ Frazey added 10 points.

“Not the result we’d hoped for but plenty of good things to take from the season,” Coach Trevor Menke said. “We saw a ton of growth getting to 14 wins after losing a good core of seniors the year prior. Our seniors became strong leaders as the season went on.”

He shared a little about each senior following their final high school game.

“Max Summa – Ultimate teammate. He wanted to do whatever it took for our team to be successful everyday.

“Luke Wegman – Continued to improved his skill the last handful of years. He was always ready for whatever was thrown at him. A true competitor.

“Malachi Limback – He was like a coach on the floor for us. He sees the game at a high level.

“AJ Frazey – Loves to compete. Also showed great improvement of skill the last handful of years and was always a great contributor at whatever level he was at.

“Drew Covalt – Special player. 1000+ point scorer and will be added to scoring records here at Seward High School. But maybe most proud of how he grew and matured as a kid.”

Covalt finished the season with 370 points, averaging 14.23 points per game. He scored 1,037 for his career.
