James Wilbur Winney, of Seward, was born Sept. 15, 1943, to Wilbur and Virginia (LaRue) Winney in St. Louis, Missouri.

He attended Lincoln Southeast High School, graduating in 1962. James served in the United States Air Force from December 1969 to January 1979. He served in both Vietnam and Desert Storm. James earned his education degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He worked as a contract engineer for the Department of Defense. On May 20, 2000, James was united in marriage to Karen Hagelberger in Lincoln. He was an amateur radio operator and part of the Civil Air Patrol. He was also an avid Husker fan. James passed away Nov. 30, 2022, in Seward, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 15 days.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Winney of Seward; daughters, Sara Jane (Ross) Martin of Penryn, California, Laura Sue Winney (fiancé, and Dave Christensen) of Lincoln, California; stepdaughter, Lucy (Rick) Faith; grandchildren, Monica and Melissa Martin; step-grandchildren, Beverly-Ann and Morgan Faith; brother, David (Kathryn) Winney of San Antonio, Texas; and niece, Allison Winney. James was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Virginia Winney.  

The memorial service was Dec. 5 at First Plymouth Church in Lincoln. Memorial contributions are suggested in care of Nebraska No-Kill Canine Rescue or any no-kill rescue of the donor's choice. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.volzkefuneralhome.com.
