Historic Courthouse District signs installed

The first in a series of unique signs designating the Seward County Historic Courthouse District were installed last week, just in time for Seward’s Independence Day celebration.

The area around the Seward County courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, and a group of local residents is working to emphasize that fact with new signs.

The Seward City Council approved the signs this spring.

The Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership, the Seward First Impressions working group and the city collaborated on the series of street signs that will emphasize the special feel of the downtown square.

The signs were designed by Joanie Brecka, director of marketing and storytelling for the SCCDP. They tie the city and county’s branding into one cohesive design, with red and white lettering over a deep blue background, replacing the green and white street signs only in the courthouse block.

Additionally, plans are to place a historical marker about the district on the southeast corner of the courthouse lawn, and a wayfinding sign on the northeast corner to assist visitors in finding places like the bandshell and the civic center.

Other signs will be attached to the black lamp posts at the north, south, east and west entrances to the district along Highways 15 and 34.
