Those who attended the air show at the Seward Municipal Airport Thursday, July 4, watched with hands over hearts as a parachutist jumped from a plane and unfurled an American flag. During his jump, he was encircled by two other planes leaving trails of smoke. His jump was perfectly timed with "The Star-Spangled Banner," as he landed on the anthem's last notes. A crew met him at the bottom to catch the flag at just the right second so it didn't touch the ground.
Seward celebrated Independence Day with a patriotic celebration July 4. The crowds gathered for everything from the anvil firing bright and early to the fireworks extravaganza late at night.
Six students from the Advanced Reporting class at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as their professor, SCI staff and two other summer interns, spent the day covering it all.
