Groundbreaking ceremony set for wellness center

An official groundbreaking ceremony will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, for the Seward Wellness Center.

The groundbreaking will be held at the site of the new facility along Waverly Road, across the street from Seward Middle School.

“It has been an exciting last two to three weeks,” Wellness Center Executive Director Joel Brase said Oct. 3.

The city is working through bid packages and has started pre-construction meetings with its general contractor, Sampson Construction.

Initial dirt work will begin on Oct. 16.

Shane Baack of Seward Changing the Game, the organization fundraising for the wellness center, said the group has seen positive movement on funding over the last few weeks.

The organization is trying to raise the last $3.5 million needed to meet its $21.5 million goal. It is waiting to hear back on four grant applications and continues to receive private pledges.

“We’re definitely going to start dirt work because we’re close enough,” Baack said.

The project must be complete by June of 2025, otherwise the organization forfeits a $5 million state grant through American Rescue Plan funding.

“We’re very excited to see what’s happening up there,” Brase said.

The public is invited to attend the Oct. 31 groundbreaking, but nearby parking will be limited.

Watch for further details as the event nears.
