Since Nov. 11, Veterans Day, was on a Sunday this year, area schools held programs Monday, with a few hosting observances the week before. The Nebraska National Guard Museum hosted a Quilts of Valor presentation, and the Seward County Historical Society also held a reception for veterans and their families. Centennial superintendent honored

Centennial Superintendent Tim DeWaard earned the University of Nebraska at Kearney Leaders in Education and Service Award. DeWaard (center) is pictured with Richard Meyer, chair of the educational administration department at UNK, and Patricia Hoehner, associate professor with the educational administration department. Coming up

Concordia University’s Marxhausen Gallery of Art will host the exhibit, “Between Surface and Time,” celebrating the art and ministry of Emeriti Professors William Wolfram and Richard Wiegmann. It will be available for viewing at the Marxhausen Gallery of Art on Concordia’s campus from Oct. 28 through Dec. 12. The Marxhausen Gallery is located in Jesse Hall and is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday while classes are in session. The Gallery is closed for Thanksgiving recess Nov. 17-25.

The Seward Senior Center will celebrate veterans and November birthdays and anniversaries on Wednesday, Nov. 14. A meal will be served at noon. The Seward Kiwanis KiTones will sing at 1 p.m. All veterans may eat for free.

The fifth annual Home for the Holidays vendor and craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the 4-H Building on the Seward County Fairgrounds. More than 40 vendors will be available and food and beverages will be for sale.

The GFWC Seward Junior Women’s Club will host its 38th annual holiday craft show Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Seward County Ag Pavilion and Harvest Hall. Those attending are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or personal item to assist FoodNet and Blue Valley Community Action Partnership.

Meeting notes

The Seward County Commissioners approved a rezoning request to change land northeast of Goehner from transitional agriculture to agriculture. The land owners plan to use the area for four chicken barns but first need to apply for a conditional use permit. Also during the meeting, the board allowed the public defender to advertise for a deputy, and the board decided to advertise for a human resources director.
