Golfers see scores start to fall

Seward golfers had two competitions last week and saw improvement, Coach Jim Placke said.

Seward started the week with a triangular at Fairbury Aug. 30 and shot a 240. Crete finished with a 266, and Fairbury did not record a team score.

Remi Christensen led the Jays with a 52. Marin Johnson shot a 60, Taylor Hostert 62, Audrey Dobesh 66 and Cevahn Ernesti 66.

For four of Seward’s golfers, this was their first competition not at Seward Community Golf Course, Placke said.

“It was a great learning experience,” he said.

Christensen, the team’s only golfer with varsity experience, has struggled to start the season, but she is starting to play better, Placke said.

“Everything was as expected,” he said.

The Jays played at York Sept. 2 and finished fifth in the team standings. Christensen shot a 52-55 117 to lead the team. Hostert shot 55-56 111, Johnson 51-63 114, Ernesti 58-59 117 and Dobesh 67-74 138.

“Overall it was a very good day,” Placke said. “The scores were maybe lower than expected and where I thought on the back.”

He said the front nine holes usually play easier than the back nine.

“York is one of the toughest courses we play,” he said. “We made some real nice steps in the right direction.”

Seward hosted Tri County for a dual Sept. 7 and shot a team 230. TCHS did not record a team score.

Christensen finished in 47, Hostert 55, Johnson 63, Dobesh 65 and Ernesti 68.

Placke was pleased to see Christensen play a solid round of golf.

“She’s finally starting to relax,” he said. “I hope to see continued strides for her.”

Hostert has been the most consistent of the team, and Placke said he’s looking for her scores to drop, too.

Wind played a role in the higher scores Tuesday, as the golfers had to make adjustments they’d never made before.

The golfers are next in action Monday, Sept. 13, at the Fairbury Invitational.
