After two days of competition in slightly cool and damp conditions at Burke Stadium in Omaha, the Malcolm track teams left the state track meet with several personal records and a handful of Class C state medals.

Sophomore Courtney Sandell got the medal run started for the Clippers, clearing 10-0 in the pole vault to place fifth. Junior Alyssa Hoeft cleared 9-0, tying for 14th place.

Head Coach Jack Tarr said senior Antonio Flores “had a bad day” Friday and didn’t place in the boys’ high jump, while freshman Adrianna Sims ran a good time in the 100-meter dash but did not qualify for Saturday’s finals.

In the 800-meter run on Saturday, freshman Katelynn Holliday ran a 2:32.18 to finish 18th in the girls’ race while junior Dalton Engelbart ran his best time of the year, a 2:02.74, to place seventh.

The Malcolm girls’ 4x100-meter relay team of Sandell, Sarah Behlen, Kylie DeBaets and Sims also ran their best time of the year, finishing in 51.68 and placing seventh, while over in the high jump area, Hayley Densberger cleared 5-0, good enough for a 10th place finish.

In Saturday’s finals of the Class C 110-meter high hurdles, one of the most anticipated races of the day for Malcolm fans, two-time defending state champion Flores was edged out at the finish line by Harrison Martin of Lincoln Lutheran, preventing Flores from winning the event for the third straight year.

Flores was timed in 14.81, his best time of the year, despite his ankle giving out on him just as he leaned across the finish line. Flores, who will be attending South Dakota State on a track scholarship, had been hampered by the ankle all spring.

In the final two events of the state track meet that Malcolm qualified for, Dustin Monroe went 12-6 in the pole vault to finish 12th, and both Madi Warrelmann and Sims competed in the triple jump, with Warrelmann jumping 32-9 to finish in 16th place, and Sims going 33-11 to finish in eighth place and win Malcolm’s final medal of the weekend.
