Fish fry, friends and fundraising

The Sons of the American Legion in Beaver Crossing are preparing to host the annual fish fry, an event that has become a tradition in the community.

Scheduled for Friday, March 21, the fundraiser will be at the Legion Hall in Beaver Crossing. The bar will open at 5 p.m., with fish being served starting at 6 p.m. The event operates on a free-will donation basis.

According to Jeff Cast, vice commander of the Sons of the American Legion in Beaver Crossing, the fish fry is more than just a meal, but an opportunity to give back to the community.

“We usually try to donate the money back to the community,” Cast said. “This year, we’re working on replacing the digital sign uptown on Dimery Street. In past years, we’ve helped families dealing with cancer and other hardships. We always try to support the community in any way we can.”

While the event has been an annual tradition, it did experience a brief pause due to COVID 19. However, it has since regained momentum, drawing around 200 attendees each year. People come out to enjoy a good meal and socialize.

The bar will have drinks while the menu for the evening will include fried fish, coleslaw, potatoes and bread.

Planning for the fish fry involves a dedicated group of volunteers. About 10 to 15 guys help cut up the fish in the afternoon and the cooking starts around 4 p.m. Some guys handle cooking, while others run the bar or serve food. The fish is cooked in a garage just south of the Legion Hall, thanks to a friendly neighbor who allows the use of the space.

“The biggest thing is hoping the weather cooperates,” Cast said. “If it’s decent, we can cook without freezing, and more people are likely to come out and enjoy the evening.”

The fish fry remains a crucial fundraiser for the SAL, as it is their primary source of funding for the year. For those interested in supporting the SAL, joining the organization is one of the ways to get involved. Membership is open to sons and grandsons of past legion members.

“We’re always looking for new members,” Cast said. “A lot of our legion members are aging, and more sons are stepping up to help with things like Memorial Day services and other community events.”

Whether for the food, the fellowship or the chance to support a worthy cause, Cast encourages everyone to attend the fish fry. For more information about the event or to inquire about membership, interested individuals can reach out to the Sons of the American Legion in Beaver Crossing.
