Eugene D. Hallberg

Eugene Donald Hallberg was born May 24, 1944, in Wahoo, to Edwin and Frances (Bayless) Hallberg and passed away March 5, 2024, in Seward, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 10 days. 

Gene moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, after high school, where he worked at the newspaper. On April 28, 1965, he enlisted into the United States Army and served in Korea until he was honorably discharged on Feb. 20, 1967. Gene returned to Cheyenne and was working at the newspaper when he went on a blind date with Tooty Moffett. They were united in marriage on Dec. 22, 1967, at the EUB church in Kearney. To this union, three children were born. 

Gene was employed at Monarch Construction in Kearney. In 1971, the family made the move to Goehner. Gene worked in Lincoln at Christensen Printing for 20+ years. He later was a self-employed contractor, doing various handy man jobs until his retirement. 

Gene coached baseball in Goehner and Legion baseball for 25 years. He also coached track for Gina and Jim at South Lincoln Track Club, where they traveled to Los Angeles, Texas and St. Louis. Gene loved attending the grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a member of the Great Plains Community Church, where he served on the board. Gene was also a member of the Goehner Fire Department and Seward American Legion Post #33.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Frances Hallberg; parents-in-law, Maurice (Jack) and Audrey Moffett; sister and brother-in-law, Eldora and Delmar Sagert; sister-in-law and husband, Kathy and Jim Loschen; brother-in-law, David Moffett and Roger Gonnerman and nephews, Scott Sagert and Marc Moffett.

Survivors cherishing his memory include his wife, Tooty Hallberg, Seward; children, Jeff and wife, Andi Hallberg, Seward, Gina and husband, Tom Laible, Merna, James and wife, and Angie Hallberg, Colwich, Kansas; grandchildren, Tyson Springer, Garrett (Paige) Hallberg, Bryan (Kirsten) Watson, Cheyenne Hallberg, Autumn (Ryly) Hallberg, Shaelynn (Simon) Rangel, Parker (Ali) Laible, Calyn (Sam Loy) Laible, Delaynie Laible (McKaden Smith), Carleigh Laible, Tristan Smith, Louden Smith, Jordan Hallberg (Jansyn Andreas), Kennedi Hallberg, and Jaxon Hallberg; great-grandchildren, Ethan Watson, Ella Watson, Brynley Watson, Breckenn Luebbe, Payson Rangel, and Maverick Laible; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Lois Hallberg, Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister, Elaine Gonnerman, Wahoo; sister-in-law,Dianne Moffett, Mangum, Oklahoma; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. 

The funeral service was March 11 at Great Plains Community Church in Goehner with interment at the Shelton Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to HoriSun Hospice. Arrangements by Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home.
