Ernest Louis Makovicka was born April 5, 1942, in Seward, to Louis Anton and Lucille Cecelia (Krska) Makovicka and passed away in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 12, 2024, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 7 days.

Ernest attended grade school at District 12 country school north of Seward. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Seward. The family moved to Texas, and it was there that Ernest graduated from Edinburg High School. Ernest farmed for many years in Texas. During his years in south Texas, he enjoyed hunting, especially during white-wing dove season with family and friends. He also had a great love for fishing. Many weekends were spent on the bay. He also had a great passion for gardening. No matter where he lived, if there was dirt, he was growing something. During the 1990s, he moved back to Nebraska. His love for gardening continued throughout his life and has been passed down the family tree. Ernest moved back to Texas to be closer to his daughter when his health began to fail.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joshua; and brother, Don.

Survivors cherishing his memory include his daughter, Cindy Makovicka, Texas; three sons, Luke Makovicka, Johnathan and wife, Katy Makovicka and Jeremy Makovicka, all of Alabama; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene Makovicka, Lincoln; sister, Elaine Kratochvil, Seward; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of friends.

Visitation is Friday, Feb. 9, from 1 – 8:30 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home in Seward with family receiving friends from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Seward with interment at the Seward Cemetery.
